Kristy Birchard, Director of Canary Advisors

Kristy Birchard is a patient advocate, educator, and decentralized clinical trial (DCT) professional determined to level inequitable power dynamics between patients and healthcare providers. She was first diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 3 years old and has been diagnosed with several other chronic autoimmune and pain conditions since. Over the past 7 years, she has become a subject matter expert in embedding the patient voice in the design and execution of clinical trials. She is currently the Director at Canary Advisors, a patient advocacy consultancy focused on patient-focused drug and device development.

Lisa Hepner, Director/Writer of The Human Trial

Lisa Hepner is the director and writer of the feature documentary, The Human Trial. She has lived with type 1 diabetes for 30 years, for about as long as she’s worked in film and TV. Now based in LA, she and her husband, Guy Mossman, run Vox Pop Films which specializes in producing commercials and branded content for the healthcare industry.

And Dr. Olveen Carrasquillo, Professor of Medicine and Public Health Sciences Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research Co-Director of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Dr. Olveen Carrasquillo is a national expert in minority health, health disparities, community based participatory research, access to care and community health worker interventions. He has over twenty years of experience leading large NIH Center grants and randomized trials, totaling over $60 million in funding. His work includes research in diabetes, cardio-vascular disease, HIV, cancer and most recently in precision medicine. He is one of the Principal Investigators for All of Us Southeast Enrollment Center which includes sites across Florida, Georgia, and Puerto Rico.

Moderated by Karl Cooper, Director of Public Health Programs at the American Association on Health and Disability (AAHD).
